GREETING THE MENTAWAI

OPEN TRIP
( 5 days 4 nights )
Siberut island, West Sumatra

The Mentawai people are considered one of the earliest inhabitants of the Indonesian archipelago. Many still live in a secluded and highly traditional culture much different to modern Sumatra’s mainland. However, at present moment changes are affecting the Mentawai too.

Currently only very deep into the interior of the Siberut island Mentawai people persistently live in an ancient hunting and gathering fashion. On other large Mentawai islands like Sipora, North Pagai, and South Pagai, it is getting hard to find those who still firmly hold onto Mentawai customs and traditions.

Traditionally Mentawai people live in harmony with their natural surroundings. This is deeply embedded in every aspect of life, in which a balance is created through careful self-control. Sudden changes in behavior are categorically avoided because it will disturb the balance of the universe.

Through a rite called Puliaijat, the Mentawai pay a lavish tribute to ancestral spirits. They dance so that the spirits that roam and might be disturbed by sudden changes regain their peace, and balance is restored.

SpektakelPlesir! provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the Mentawaians. Experience their live patterns and traditions. See the impact of globalization on this traditional society. Take a chance to become long-term friends with members of this unpretencious society.
