Bada Valley, Central Sulawesi

Lore Lindu National Park is located in the heart of Sulawesi on the Wallace line. With an area of more than 200 thousand hectares, most of its territory is located in 3 valleys: namely; Bada, Besoa, and Napu.

In addition to Sulawesi’s natural beauty and megalithic heritage, these three valleys are inhabited by civilizations that still produce bark cloth. Only a few other areas in Indonesia conserve the manufacturing and use of bark.

The barkcloth of the Lore plateau has its own signature colors derived from natural dyes. This cloth is used for head decorations, tops, and skirts, which are flaunted at weddings and religious rites.

The wood derived fabric is obtained from various tree species. Like the Saeh tree, Malo, Bea, and Nunu (banyan). The material is taken from the branches only. The stem is left intact in order to preserve the trees. The Lore people want to see the next generations of barkcloth manufacturers persist and thrive.

SpektakelPlesir! offers a stay in the natural beauty of the Bada Valley celebrating local fashion festivities. Harvest the unique skills of barkcloth artisans, documenting it the best way we can.
